  • The World Heritage Site Sefa-utaki is considered one of the most sacred places in Okinawa. Adjacent to this holy forest sits the Nanjo Art Museum, which was previously the Nishi Graduate School, a fully-fledged finishing school run by educators and married couple Nishidai Tsuyoshi and Nishidai Yaeko. For 23 years at this school, where women could cultivate their intelligence and refine their culture in order to become more independent and lead a richer life, the spirit of “everyday life as art” was nurtured and passed down. This strong desire to achieve beauty in life is shared by the Nanjo Art Museum through its own philosophy “beauty exists in our lives, in the way we live our lives”. We aim to create a space where young people and artists can interact with each other while also respecting Okinawa's history and culture. We also want people from all over the world to come and experience and enjoy art as something closer to home. This is our vision for the Nanjo Art Museum. We will continue to pass on the baton of beauty entrusted to us by Mr and Mrs Nishidai, and pass down their thoughts and wishes to the next generation.
