Like a home away from home

The Nanjo Museum of Art boasts Japan's first scenic art museum. As the name of its permanent exhibition space, Home Art, suggests, it is a perfect fusion of beauty and living space, embodying the museum's concept of "beauty exists in life, in living".

Over 50 works by local and international artists are displayed in the entrance, living room, dining room, Japanese-style room, and bedroom of this traditional Japanese house. This “art filled living space” provides viewers with fresh surprises and inspiration while at the same time providing many ideas on how to enjoy the beauty in everyday spaces. This Home Art was formed from the perspective and idea that “every person is an artist, an expressionist of life, and every home can be an Art Home, a small museum, without being limited by the price or value of the artwork displayed.”

Art is by no means a distant object to be admired in an exhibition room through a glass case. It is a familiar presence that can be more easily enjoyed in the home. Sometimes, artwork can even heal people's hearts.

Furthermore, the part of the building to the right of the entrance is an event space, with a spacious tatami room featuring an alcove and a chamber for tea ceremonies, and a contemporary space with sofas and an antique grand piano all in one. The space hosts various events, such as concerts that combine traditional Ryukyuan performing arts culture, like dance and Sanshin, and occasional networking events. Visitors can enjoy the fusion of Ryukyuan, Japanese and Western culture through physical and performing arts in a more relaxed style.
